Printer FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT HP PRINTERS
DOES HP locks out users from using aftermarket toners?
Yes, HP actively locks out users from using aftermarket toner and ink cartridges that do not contain an original HP microchip or electronic circuitry. This restriction is enforced through a software feature HP calls Dynamic Security, which is delivered via automatic internet firmware updates to millions of its printers.
How HP Blocks Aftermarket Toners
· The "Dynamic Security" System: If you install a third-party cartridge that uses a generic or clone chip, the printer's firmware will detect it and throw error messages like "Non-HP Chip Detected" or "Cartridge Policy Violation," entirely blocking the machine from printing. · HP+ Permanent Lock-In: If you opt into the HP+ ecosystem during your printer setup (often in exchange for a few months of free ink), the printer is permanently locked into requiring original HP supplies for its entire operational lifespan. This firmware update cannot be rolled back or undone. · HP's Justification: HP claims this practice protects their intellectual property, prevents malware or viruses from infiltrating networks via cloned chips, and ensures optimal print quality.
The Backlash and Legal Settlements
This practice has faced severe criticism from consumer advocacy groups and the industry. In fact, a consensus of users on Reddit has criticized Dynamic Security as anti-consumer, noting that it conflicts with global environmental standards like EPEAT 2.0 (which explicitly prohibits blocking remanufactured cartridges). While HP has faced multiple class-action lawsuits over the years, a 2025 settlement resulted in only a very narrow win for consumers: HP agreed to provide an opt-out or firmware downgrade option, but only for 21 specific older printer models. Most HP printers manufactured after December 2016 remain fully subject to Dynamic Security blocks.
How Consumers Bypass the Block
If you want to use third-party toner without your printer bricking, users generally rely on a few workarounds: 1. Turn off Automatic Updates: You can access your printer’s control panel settings or the Embedded Web Server (EWS) via its IP address to disable automatic firmware updates before a new block is pushed. 2. Buy Remanufactured Toners with OEM Chips: Many reputable third-party sellers supply "remanufactured" cartridges that reuse an authentic, recycled HP chip. The printer will typically throw a warning that the cartridge is used or empty, but it will still allow you to print. 3. Chip Swapping: Some users manually pry the original chip off their old, empty HP cartridge and slide it into a cheaper generic cartridge. If you are dealing with a blocked printer right now, could you share your HP printer model number? I can check if it is one of the few models allowed to downgrade its
firmware or provide specific steps to turn off its update settings. Just email me and let’s see what we can do. jim@datasourceink.com or call my Cell 630-730-9301
